This project was funded by us through the Sportivate programme and run in partnership with the Lifestyle Activity and Food (LAF) programme and Sunderland City Hospital. It was aimed at overweight children and families who had been referred by a GP or other healthcare professional to the programme. The project was primarily targeted at 11-15 year olds, giving them the opportunity to try new sports. Teenagers referred on to the programme were asked which sports they would like to try, with golf being one of the popular choices.
In total, out of eight young people who were engaged over the six week programme, all eight participants were sustained at the end of the project.
"LAF and George Washington Golf Club worked in partnership to plan an exit route after the six week project, agreeing on a discounted coaching rate for participants to continue on with. One of the participants went on to become the regional winner at the national Sportivate Awards. He is now a junior member of George Washington Golf Club where he still attends and is set to play in a tournament later this year."
