Amongst the varied support that is available to primary schools from us, is a funding grant specifically for the Primary Funding programme. The Tyne & Wear School Sport Bursary exists to help teachers and other personnel to deliver more and better quality sport and PE in schools both within the curriculum and before/after school.

Schools can apply for up to £300 to help fund coaching and sport qualification costs for staff, in order for the new experiences and skills to aid and improve the quality of PE and activity. The bursary is open throughout periods of the school year for teachers, support staff, school volunteers and parents linked to the school.

Through this bursary we supported Riverside Primary School in North Tyneside’s to provide CPD opportunities within their school to upskill their teaching staff and provide better quality sessions. An England Athletics ‘Elevating Athletics’ course was arranged at the school, and was delivered to 10 of school’s, who were a mixture of teaching staff and teaching assistants. The school also received support from us in organising the resources and the allocation of a suitable tutor. The one day ‘Elevating Athletics’ course for Primaries aims to impart the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to deliver enjoyable and engaging lessons that encourage maximum participation and increase the understanding, skills, fitness and enjoyment of children.

Debbie Beresford, Education Coordinator for England Athletics, who assisted us in organising the course fully supports the work done within schools.

“The course highlights safe and inclusive teaching methods, which focus on developing competency in the fundamental movement skills that underpin athleticism before applying the skills to running, jumping and throwing events. The course really focuses on inclusion, and helps to support delivery and measure progression”
