Newcastle Vikings Handball Club

Inspirational coach Marlen Slinning Goulty and next generation coach Sandra Christke were nominated by Andrea King at Newcastle Vikings Handball Club to receive the #PassOnYourPassion baton.

Andrea said she had nominated Marlen because: "Marlen founded Newcastle Vikings Handball Club in September 2012 and through her devotion to handball has driven the successful development of the club and the sport in Tyne & Wear and the North East region over the past five years from virtually nothing, including enabling the Vikings to become the first handball club in the country to achieve Clubmark recognition in 2015.

As the club's head coach she has led the development of both our senior men's and women's teams and been inspirational in our women's team's successes in particular, as well as working non-stop to encourage youngsters to play handball through her independent coaching in the region's schools, developing junior teams both within the club and now at county level having initiated county-wide handball schools events. Clearly a huge achievement in a relatively unknown sport and an area where handball has been little practiced before she came to the fore."

Marlen is passing her passion for coaching on to Sandra Christke, who has also been a member of the club since it was established. She has successfully captained the women's team through all of their four league seasons to date.

Andrea said: "Sandra has been keenly helping out with coaching the junior players both within the club and for the emerging Tyne & Wear County teams, Sandra would be an ideal candidate to support towards gaining her formal handball coaching qualifications."

We will now be working with both Marlen and Sandra to support them to achieve their goals in coaching and personal development.
