During the summer a number of sports clubs in Tyne and Wear have received funding support to help run events linked to the exciting summer of sport we have had this year.
Tyne & Wear Sport created the Summer of Sport Club Bursary scheme to support local club events taking place in the summer of 2016. Clubs received money to create and run events that would open up their doors to new members from the local community making their club more accessible in a fun and social atmosphere.
In total, 26 clubs received over £6,000 from Tyne & Wear Sport to run a range of events such as, Family Summer BBQ’s, Monkfest and a Rugby Festival. The bursary supported facility hire, equipment, refreshments and entertainment including music bands and bouncy castles.
The events proved to be popular, even attracting visitors from outside the region. Carlisle RFC attended the Novocastrians festival and their head coach said: “Hopefully this will be a permanent fixture in our dairies every year as the youngsters don’t get enough of this great game in the summer, also the atmosphere is superb.”
Jade Mackie from Tyne & Wear Sport who organised the Summer of Sport Club Bursary scheme said: “With such an action packed summer of sport in 2016 including the Euros, Olympics and the Ryder Cup, numerous clubs accessed the bursary to support their own events. This has led to hundreds of young people and adults visiting their local clubs and trying out new sports. Our hope is this is the first step in getting these people to regularly attend their local clubs and ensure the clubs are sustainable in the future.”
Sid Mukthar from the Kodokwai Judo Club who held a Mini Olympics event said, “On the day we had about 150 people through the doors. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and are looking forward to the next one. Massive thanks to the Tyne and Wear Club Bursary for their donation, without which the day would not have been such a success or worse, may not have happened at all”.
