We recently attended the opening day of Hollinside Golf Academy at Whickham Golf Club. The academy received a total of £75,000 of Sport England Inspired Facilities funding, which we helped them to secure.
Gateshead Mayor, Councillor Alison Thompson, opened the Golf Academy which saw a gathering of local community visitors, club members and the area’s sports facilitators. Special thanks came from Club President Les Britton to supporters and volunteers for their assistance in successfully delivering this project.
Les Britton said, “The Club had also self-funded the Academy with an additional £36,000 to construct two new holes on the course and provide a revised Par 71 men’s layout and Par 74 for ladies”.
The new facilities include a superb short game area, three covered driving bays and a fully equipped Teaching/Practice suite. The suite is fitted with the latest GC2 Simulator, capable of full data delivery for coaching and club fitting. The Club also plan to open it up for hire, offering competitive play on a choice of nine top golf courses. The new facilities have created the means to provide golf all year around.
Jade Mackie from Tyne & Wear Sport said, “It was great working with Whickham Golf Club to help them secure the Inspired Facilities Funding for the new club. They have a very dedicated team of volunteers that ensured the success of the bid.
“The short game area, driving bays and the indoor golf option will really help the club attract more junior players, new members and also provide excellent additional facilities for existing members. The launch event was not only a great success but a chance to reward those who have worked so hard on the project for the last 18 months.”
