Silksworth Cricket Club is supporting the future of cricket in the region

Silksworth Cricket Club was founded back when the Durham Coast League was originally formed in 1937 and they have 50 members with three level two English Cricket Board (ECB) coaches.

Club Success

The club organises regular cricket training and competitions and as well as this, the club demonstrates its versatility by hosting events and open days. The club is hosting a More than Music Festival in July 2017 and this is a major event in their calendar, as well as for the town of Sunderland.

The club is very successful at maintaining a strong relationship with the local community, through both its cricket sessions and other public activities on offer.

Malcolm said, “We are really excited about the event as it is going to attract a big crowd and it is not only music that is going to be played, there will be food stands around the festival too.”

Future plans

Ongoing maintenance of their facilities including the cricket pitches and club house, are on the planning agenda to provide the best possible resources for their members.

One of the other club’s priorities is to create more opportunities for children’s cricket. The club is finalising plans for an under 11’s team which will introduce the younger generation to cricket. If the children want to stay with the club after they reach 11, there is the Outdoor Junior Programme they can become part of which develops their talent further.

The club recently purchased some white cricket shirts for the under 11’s cricket team they have recently formed, with our latest bursary round. Committee member, Malcolm Nickol said, “The bursary has given us the chance to give the children an identity of being part of a team and the club. We also recognise that cricket clothing and equipment is expensive, so anything we can do to make this easier for the parents is important”.

Another junior programme that the club is starting is the All Stars Cricket programme which is run by the ECB and provides boys and girls from ages five to eight, with an eight week fun cricket course. All participants receive an All Stars Cricket branded pack that includes a cricket bat, ball, shirt, cap, personalised backpack and a water bottle.
