The dilemma of technology in sport; how can technology be used to really add value and not just be a fad trend to most?
Some people find it hard to follow latest trends in fashion, sport or technology for example. Having the latest Apple gadget or Smart phone app doesn't always benefit us unless we know everything about the product and what it is going to serve us. So the question for most is, when do we really need the added value of technology to help us with our fitness?
The overall goal for using technology in sport and fitness is to collect data to improve performance. Evaluating the body’s performance has become the new normal for the everyday person just wanting to keep fit. Virtually any part of the human body can be monitored including the wrist, arm, legs, ears, breath and brain. But the reasoning for using a gadget for optimum performance or just for fashion is somewhat a problem in this day and age. Anyone can use the gadgets but they are only effective if the consumer has goals and action plans that the consumer is dedicated to, otherwise becoming a fashion accessory.
What really has its perks with the fitness trackers is that they act as a 24/7 personal trainer. The tracker monitors your goal progress by psychological encouragement to run more than you did the week previous; or decrease your resting heart rate. Sometimes people feel nervous about attending the gym as they don’t believe they are using the machines correctly or performing the correct technique. The fitness trackers however allow you to rely on them as you can take them anywhere with you to work out. The fitness trackers give you a focus when you start feeling nervous.
The fitness tracker allows you to visually see your progress for yourself by showing measurements in a ‘zone’ so that you can clearly see how you’re progressing. The coloured zones are red, amber and green to signify whether you have reached your goal or are almost there. Research shows that wearing a fitness tracker can increase a person’s activity levels by 30%. That is a substantial percentage that can change the way people lead their lifestyles to a healthier version.
So the fitness tracker definitely has its pros and cons, but has demonstrated that it can be a very rewarding investment.
