Club/Organisation: North Tyneside Council

Nominated: Marc Thompson

Role: Coach/Volunteer

Marc works as a Leisure Attendant and Sports Coach at the Parks Sports Centre in North Tyneside. He has dedicated a substantial amount of his time and effort into delivering both new and existing opportunities for disabled people to take part in a wide range of activities.

Participants at Marc’s sessions return week after week. In addition to the fantastic coaching they receive from Marc, Marc is also keen to make sure that participants get the chance to socialise with one another and develop bonds that will last outside of the sessions.

Marc’s passion to increase disability sport has enabled new and existing participants to try new things by introducing sports and signposting participants to new sessions. Mark has recently passed his Mental Health First Aid Course, run by the Newcastle United Football Foundation, and is now using his latest skills to break down barriers and increase wellbeing and confidence within his sessions.

Mandy went on to say, “Thank you Marc for all that you do, you’re our local hero!”

Mandy Black, Leisure & Wellbeing Officer at North Tyneside Council, said “We’re delighted to have someone like Marc working for us at the council. Mark delivers on disability sessions most days of the weeks both as a sports coach and a volunteer. These sessions vary from multi sports, rebound therapy, archery, para-badminton and more. Marc’s sessions are always busy, and he has an excellent relationship with his participants.”

Marc’s work has not gone unnoticed, external partners such as Smile Through Sport and LD: North East value the work that he has done and have frequently noted his ability and professionalism.
