The Daily Mile local Coordinator

My role at Tyne & Wear Sport as The Daily Mile Local Coordinator is to promote and support local schools to engage in the initiative as part of the Government’s Childhood Obesity Strategy. Working in collaboration with other stakeholders we hope to contribute to the national vision of having all 20,000 primary schools in England taking part. Through enabling schoolchildren to walk or run for 15 minutes every day, The Daily Mile has been proven to significantly improve fitness levels as well as promoting emotional, mental and social well-being.

After a career change from telecommunications, I gained a degree in Sport and Exercise Development from the University of Sunderland. This led to various roles in coaching, physical activity promotion and sports development in the Derwentside area of County Durham.

My sports background involved lots of activities when I was younger, namely football (county and US collegiate level) but also cricket, athletics, golf and basketball at school and recreational level. More recently, I have coached several junior football teams, enjoy the odd skiing trip and physical activity challenge such as the Great North Swim, Parkrun and the 24-hour Three Peaks Challenge.
