We supported Bernard Gilpin Primary School in Sunderland to provide CPD opportunities within their school and to upskill their teaching staff to provide better quality sports sessions. A Sports Coach UK ‘Introduction to the FUNdamentals of Movement’ workshop was arranged at the school and delivered to 15 of Bernard Gilpin’s staff, who were a mixture of teaching staff, teaching assistants and lunchtime supervisors.

Gary Adey, Teacher of Class 1, who asked for our help and support to organise the workshop, praised how well the course went and its suitability to improving the school’s PE provision: “The course went really well; at the moment we deliver P.E. for two hours every week on a Tuesday afternoon and we are looking to upskill all teachers and support staff. All the staff fully enjoyed themselves and the tutor was brilliant!”

The school was able to fund the course through financial support provided by the Tyne & Wear Sport School Sport Bursary. The bursary exists to help teachers and other personnel to deliver more and better quality sport and PE in schools, both within the curriculum and before/after school. We also supported the school in organising the resources and the allocation of a suitable tutor.

The FUNdamentals workshop is all about developing children’s agility, balance and co-ordination and plays a crucial role in the delivery of the PE national curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2.
