1.    Purpose

The Board Diversity Policy (‘the Policy’) sets out the approach to diversity on the Board of Trustees of Tyne & Wear Sport (‘the Board’).

2.    Scope of Application

The Policy applies to the Board. It does not apply to diversity in relation to employees of Tyne & Wear Sport, which is covered by Tyne & Wear Sport’s Equality Policy.

3.    Policy Statement

Tyne & Wear Sport is committed to the principles of equality and diversity.

  • Equality is about making sure people from all sections of the community have fair and equal opportunities.

  • Diversity is about respecting, understanding and valuing people’s differences and making sure everyone is treated in an appropriate way.

Tyne & Wear Sport recognises and embraces the benefits of having a diverse Board, and sees increasing diversity at Board level as an essential element to achieve our stated aims and objectives. A truly diverse Board will include and make good use of differences in the skills, experience, background, race, gender and other qualities of Trustees. We are committed to maintaining a minimum of 30% of each gender on the TWS Board and to meet the other objectives contained within our Diversity Action Plan.

These differences will be considered in determining the optimum composition of the Board and when possible should be balanced appropriately. All Board appointments are made on merit, in the context of the skills and experience the Board, as a whole, requires to fulfil its responsibilities.

In reviewing Board composition, Trustees will consider the benefits of all aspects of diversity including, but not limited to, those described above, in order to maintain an appropriate range and balance of skills, experience and background on the Board.

In identifying suitable candidates for appointment to the Board, Trustees will consider candidates on merit against objective criteria and with due regard for the benefits of diversity on the Board.

4.    Review

The Board will review the Board Diversity Policy, which will include an assessment of its effectiveness and any measurable objectives, if set, for achieving diversity on the Board on an annual basis and make recommendations where appropriate. At any given time the Board may seek to improve one or more aspects of its diversity and measure progress accordingly.

5.    Monitoring and Reporting

The Board will report annually, in the Tyne & Wear Sport Annual Report, on the process it has used in relation to Board appointments. Such report will include a summary of this Policy, and any measurable objectives if set for implementing the Policy and progress made towards achieving those objectives.

Tyne & Wear Sport is a company limited by guarantee with charitable status.

Having reviewed the composition of the Board, Trustees have concluded that the overall effectiveness of the organisation will be enhanced by having a clear plan to broaden diversity of membership. Consequently the Board has agreed to set the following Diversity Targets:

  • A minimum of 33% of each gender on the Board by 2017
  • One Black, Asian minority ethnic (BAME) Board member by 2020
  • One Board member with a disability by 2020

The progress we have achieved towards meeting the above targets will be reviewed annually and the findings will be published on the Tyne & Wear Sport website.

We work with a wide range of national, regional and local partners to develop policies and deliver programmes to encourage more people from priority groups to get more involved in sport, whether that be playing, coaching or volunteering.
