Leadership Academies

Since September 2008, we have been working with School Sport Partnerships to establish five Leadership Academies across the sub region. The aim is to engage with 400 active volunteers and provide additional training, support, mentoring and assistance/signposting into quality placement opportunities for these young people.

Gateshead was one of the first to launch its Leadership Academy and now has over 50 young people from across the borough attending the academy where they have received many training and development opportunities. They have become involved with different sporting events, had the opportunity to travel around the country as well as integrating into local community sports clubs.

The volunteering opportunities young people have become involved in have been wide ranging from assisting coaching sessions, to designing logos and developing websites.

We are currently in the process of developing a Higher Level County Leadership Academy which will select the top 40 volunteers from across the sub-region. These sessions will aim to challenge and further enhance the skill set of the young people. The Academy will also look to recognise and reward volunteers for their efforts over the last year.
