A five-a-side team of ex-England international footballers are challenging lovers of the beautiful game in Tyne & Wear to take to the pitch this summer and compete for the opportunity to play against them in the ‘Legends Charity Cup 2008’. The five-a-side tournament, run by children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent, is open for any team to enter and budding footballers will be able to battle it out against each other at a regional heat held on Sunday 6 July at Newcastle.

Captained by ex-Newcastle star Rob Lee, the Legends team are experienced, world-class players who between them have played for England 48 times and won an impressive 22 major trophies. Joining Rob in the ‘Legends’ team, will be the charismatic ex-manager and player Peter Reid as well as ex-Arsenal stars Ray Parlour and Nigel Winterburn and shot-stopper and fans’ favourite goalkeeper David Beasant.

Dee Richardson local Event Fundraising Manager for CLIC Sargent is keen to see insert town/city represented at the final. She says: “The Legends Charity Cup offers players of all abilities the chance of a lifetime to take on a team of ex-England stars and try to beat them at their own game! It’s a great opportunity to show off your football skills to your neighbours, workmates and family and raise lots of money to help children and young people with cancer.”

The winning team from each heat will go forward to play in the final of the ‘Legends Charity Cup’ at England’s former training ground at Bisham Abbey on Sunday 27 July with the chance to face CLIC Sargent’s Legends team. And it’s not just great footballing skills which will help a team reach the final, CLIC Sargent is also offering places for the team that raises the most money from each regional heat and the teams with the most creative names.

All money raised from the Legends Charity Cup will go directly to help children and young people with cancer, and their families. Teams, consisting of five players and two substitutes, will be asked to pay £50 to register and raise a minimum of £250 in sponsorship – which works out as only £35 each. Teams will also have the chance to win a signed England shirt.
