Sunderland Awarded Beacon Status
Beacon Status is granted to organisations that demonstrate a clear vision, excellent services and a willingness to innovate within a specific theme. For 2006-2007 Sunderland City Council has been awarded Beacon status for its innovative and groundbreaking work in delivering culture and sport for hard to reach groups.
The award recognises the Council’s achievements to date and its on-going commitment to improve the lives of hard to reach groups through sport and physical activity. Key elements of the excellent practice highlighted in the bid include;
- Reaching disadvantaged children and young people, vital to our contribution to Every Child Matters: Change for Children, through our strategic partnerships and a unique national Specialist Federation pilot embracing club links and a comprehensive PE and Schools Sports programme.
- Harnessing the power of the scrutiny function to radically transform sports, and play and urban games, service provision.
- Pioneering innovative, strategic partnerships to powerfully use sport and physical activity to close disproportional gaps, particularly in health, in areas of high multiple deprivation.
- Excelling in risk management in our highly acclaimed outdoor activities centre to give young people of all ethnicity, and all people with disabilities, life enhancing, confidence-building, challenging opportunities.
- Nurturing and developing neighbourhood-based partnerships of trust to increase the impact of non traditional sports in the lives of socially excluded young people.
